About Nether Wasdale

Nether Wasdale lies opposite Wasdale Head at the western fringe of Wast Water. Its picturesque white cottages and charming hotels set around a fine village green appear somewhat dwarfed against the backdrop of the mighty screes.

Features of the village include a maypole and a drinking trough of 1888 both set on the village green, and a church from the 16th century. The church, St.Michael's and All Angels is thought to have originated as a chapelry of St. Bee's Priory has many historic treasures. Included in these is a George III Coat of Arms with original inscriptions, Jacobean Altar rails, a lectern and carved pulpit from York Minster and some lovely 17th century wall panelling. This is a lovely, peaceful place of worship, its beauty heightened by sunlight filtering through windows and when the nights draw in, the church lit by gas lamps exudes a wonderful spiritual atmosphere.

This lovely landscape is covered with woodland interspersed with rivers, streams, tiny silver tarns and majestic fells. Lying in the shadow of the Cumbrian Mountains it offers glorious walking and touring country with lovely views of Scafell (964ft), Scafell Pike (978ft) and Bow Fell (902ft).

The River Irt flows through Nether Wasdale and at Ravenglass a short distance to the west you can take a trip on the Heritage Steam Railway which takes in the stunning scenery of the Valley of the River Esk.

Visitors will find comfortable hotels, pubs and inns in the region. There are a few scattered shops catering mostly for hikers, but some have crafts and gifts. A larger concentration of shops can be found in Egremont, Gosforth or Ravenglass.
